There are many spiders in Utah. Luckily, most of them are not something that you need to fear. However, there is one spider that you should be cautious around if you see them in your home. The black widow spider is a dangerous and venomous spider known to invade homes and cause many problems for homeowners.

Physical Characteristics: How To Recognize A Black Widow Spider

Black widow spiders in Utah have a recognizable appearance. The female black widow usually measures 1 ½ to 1 ? inches long. Their bodies are black and have a shiny or glossy appearance. Their abdomens are plump and round and feature a reddish-orange marking in the shape of an hourglass on their underside. The black widow spider will typically spin webs close to the ground, and you will find them hanging upside down in their webs, allowing you to spot its unique marking easily.

The male black widows look much different from the female black widows. The male black widow is only about half the size of the female black widow. Also, the male black widow has a tan or gray-colored body. The males don’t have an hourglass marking on their underside. Instead, they typically have orange spots or markings on their lower abdomen or other parts of their body.

Black Widow Spider Bites: Understanding The Potential Health Risks

Black widow spiders have venom that is poisonous and can be lethal in certain instances. The neurotoxic protein that is in the venom can cause severe symptoms. Usually, a person won’t feel anything when bitten by a black widow. However, over the next 20 minutes, the pain will start to increase and could be accompanied by muscle cramps and weakness. Other serious symptoms could include:

  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fainting
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Elevated blood pressure

Not everyone bitten by a black widow spider will experience these serious side effects. Some people only experience mild pain and swelling that goes away on its own. However, if you do experience any serious side effects after getting bit by a black widow spider, you should seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

It’s also important to note that while male black widow spiders are venomous, they rarely bite people. If this spider bites you, you shouldn’t experience any of the serious side effects that the female black widow spider bite can cause.
